Middle Tier Rankings

The bad news, the schedule is not out yet. The good news, we still have another couple days to discover new acts on the lineup. I took the initial lineup based on billing, and created three tiers, the upper, middle, and lower. Since we all know the upper tier, I counted from the bottom. The lowest 30 are the lower tier, the next lowest 30 are the middle tier, and everything above that is the upper tier.

I've spent a couple hours listening to each band on the lineup (except that one band that doesn't actually have music), so this is my general impression and ranking of the middle tier.

1. Dr. Dog
2. Boys Noize
3.
Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeroes
4. Midlake
5. Brother Ali
6. Simian Mobile Disco
7.
Portugal. The Man
8. The Hold Steady
9. Miike Snow
10. Caribou
11. Japandroids
12. Why?
13. Quasi
14. YACHT
15. Freelance Whales

The other 15: Laura Marling, The Lonely Forest, Wale, Girls, Mayer Hawthorne & the County, The Middle East, Telekenisis, The Posies, Fruit Bats, Camera Obscura, City & Colour, No Age, Temper Trap, Vetiver, Patrick Watson

Agree, disagree, hate, like, anything else?

the line up at the top of this blog could use some updating. simian mobile disco is playing a dj set, and its missing jets overhead, patton oswalt, and brent weinbach.

I added the new comedians and put Jets Overhead back on the lineup. Sometimes I fall asleep with my computer turned on, and delete important things while asleep, family photos, recipes, resumes, Yeti bands few have heard of, the usual.

This is a ranking of the middle tier as I defined it. If a band you like did not make the top 15, or the other 15, it is because they are either an upper tier band, or a lower tier band, based on my posted definition.

Why? is one of the best acts on the lineup. And I'll tell you, I saw Why? and Dr. Dog both within a week at one point and Why?'s show just dominated.

I've listened to most of these artists a lot. Not all, but most. Here's my ranking, which of course is the correct ranking:

1. Midlake
2. Japandroids
3. Dr. Dog
4. Quasi
5. Telekinesis!
6. Portugal. The Man
7. Caribou
8. Wale
9. Fruit Bats
10. The Posies

Were Fool's Gold, Shabazz Palaces, Fresh Espresso and The Long Winters outside the "middle tier"? Sorry, I can't be bothered to count it up. But if they weren't there is no excuse for them not to be on this list.

I beg anyone willing to listen to check out Brother Ali. He's one of the most passionate artists I've ever come, and his music is nothing short of beautiful. Please, do yourself a favor and catch his set.

Pretty good ratings except one thing....
MIIKE SNOW BENEATH THE HOLD STEADY?

Please listen to silvia twice and then try and not put miike snow at least at #3.
